Day 21 – Maui Race Day

Happy Sunday run day for anyone out training today!

This is my day off so I had a lovely sleep in and am attempting to slowly ingest enough caffeine to be productive today.

I just wanted to send a huge shout-out to all of the UofC Marathoners who are running the Maui Marathon today! It’s currently 8:30 a.m. in Maui (about 12:30 p.m. here) and our runners will have been on the course for about 3.5 hours now. The race started at 5 a.m. Maui time in order to beat some of that Hawaii heat. I can’t say I am disappointed to be missing out on that obscenely early start time. I am not a morning person.

Day 22 – Mom’s power cookies

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, Daily nutrition for marathon training, keeping myself and my brothers fed when we were growing up was no easy task.

One thing my Mom always used to make for us was Power Cookies. As a hearty cookie with a lot staying power, they made a great second breakfast after a morning swim practice and were good for eating in between swims at at a meet.

I haven’t had need for Power Cookies for a few years but recently decided to make a batch to get me through these last few weeks. They will make a great recovery snack after a run and I might even try them as fuel during my next long run. I took some to share with the team after our 90-minute run this morning and I am pleased they were very well received. This was my first attempt at them on my own and while they were no Mom’s cookies, they will do 😉

Day 23 – Daily nutrition for marathon training

Having been involved in competitive sports for most of my life, I started the marathon training program with a pretty good understanding of the importance of maintaining proper nutrition while taking part in high-volume or high-intensity training.

Growing up I was a competitive swimmer and by the time I was in junior high I was training 5-7 times a week. That volume of training, in addition to being a growing teenager meant that feeding me was almost a full time job. Fortunately for me, that was a job both of my parents took really seriously, unfortunately for them, they both had other full time jobs to keep up at the same time. I am still not sure how they did it all.

Day 24 – Goodbye life, hello marathon prep

Status Update

I am only one week into my 30-day blog challenge and it’s official, marathon prep has fully taken over my life. The things is, I really don’t mind. That was exactly my intention.

You only run your first marathon once and when I look back on this experience I want to do it with no regrets. I don’t want to look back and think I could have written more, trained more or tried harder than I have. Between blogging, training and everything that comes with those two things, I feel focused and motivated.

Of course no plan is ever perfect. I’ve skipped runs for bad reasons, I’ve made midnight pizza runs and probably eaten too much ice cream. But what is life without pizza and ice cream? Not one I want to live.
